Bantam Egg Laying

Before we decided to get bantam chickens for pest control (and because we enjoy our chickens so much) I did a fair lot of reading to make sure we were prepared. The thing I read repeatedly was that bantam breeds are generally poor egg producers, and that I should not expect much of an increase to our flock’s egg production from the bantams. I will just say “au contraire”. We have 10 bantam hens and get about 8 bantam eggs per day. This is what my egg skelter looks like, even though I have made scrambled eggs for the kids several mornings this week, and I gave away a bunch of eggs last weekend.

My Frizzle Bantam hen Jane lays an egg practically everyday.

WOW that's a lot of eggs! I wish I had that luck. Those were the days when we had 1 year old large hens...instead of five and nine year old broodies...sigh.
I think all the silkies bring down the average egg production rate for bantams down by 50%, they are so broody!
IME mine don't lay much at all. The silkies actually do OK when they aren't broody, but I have never witnessed an egg from our d'Uccle ever. (I'm sure she sneaks into the box once in a while though!) They are all at least over 5 years old though...lol
We have new chicks, 10 weeks old, I can't wait for them to start laying. Hopefully they'll be a bit more productive.
