I got this crazy notion to get some bantams because I would love some eggs. We have 6 ducks now and I love their eggs but nothing beats a fresh over easy chicken egg. I use duck eggs for everything else which is why I was thinking bantams. I'm pretty sure we will be rehoming my drake so we wouldn't have to worry about him mating the chickens.

I like their small size and cuteness, but I would of course have to overbuy and sell off extra males. I can buy just pullets of standard sizes. Is there a smaller standard breed that is docile? I'm thinking of just 2-3 chickens. My ducks range from smaller to medium sized ducks. I hope I posted in the right area, usually I'm over in the duck area.

If you like your eggs over easy I'd go with standard size hens. Bantam eggs cook so fast it's easy to over cook them and you only get one bite of yolk per egg.

I think the bantams are fun but the full figured gals are more practical. In my location, the larger chickens are much less interesting to aerial predators.

Large Chicken Egg = 4-6 bites
Large Chicken requires a lot more space
Large Chicken, some breeds, lay an egg a day

Bantam Chicken Egg = 2 bites if you are lucky
Bantam Chicken requires less space so more birds?
Bantam Chicken, some breeds, lay an egg a day

So, how much do you like eggs for breakfast?

I have large fowl Wyandottes, Rocks, Andalusians and they all lay an egg a day without fail. I also have Sebright Bantams that lay an egg a day. To look at and watch my favorites are the Bantams.

Thanks everyone! Standard breeds sound like it might be a better option and I'll have to think about this. Y'all pointed out some things I would never of though of.

Right now we hardly eat them for breakfast because I'm still waiting on most girls to lay. Eggs for breakfast is usually once or twice a week. My kids eat fired duck eggs but we all eat scramble duck eggs.
