Bantam or just a runt

My little Brown Leghorn is just that- little. Even the day my DBF brought her home the first time I laughed at how small she was. Get back in that egg- I told her- You ain't done yet. But stubbornly, she refused. She has always been a mystery to us, since my DBF bought her out of the Easter Egger bin so we were surprised to discover she is actually a brown leghorn and now, at 22 weeks, I'm wondering when is she going to grow?? She is still small compared to all the rest of the chickens. How do I know if she's bantam too?

She's just small

i have some like that about that size but mine are over a year old but they still lay really well. Hope this helps

Can you imagine how many times those chicks are handled and just tossed back into whatever bin is closest when they come from F&F stores??

How could it be a suprize that what you thought you were getting turns out to be something else?

Your bird looks like a banty Brown Leghorn (leg-urn) pullet. At 22 wks she's done growing. Might get a little thicker, but that's about it.

Thank you~ She is a cute bird and even though not what we thought, she has been even better. And a very good layer so far- little eggs from a little bird.

It a little hard to tell in the picture but I would say that your Leghorn is a standard and not a bantam.. Leghorns arnt that big of a chicken to start with compared to say a Plymouth Rock or a Wyandotte.. A Standard Leghorn hen should weigh around 4-4.5 lbs (now some hatchery birds do get bigger/ smaller) A Bantam Leghorn hen should weigh around 20-22 oz (some hatchery bird bigger) She looks to be a nice Light Brown Leghorn..

Thanks! She's about 3lbs so I would say definitely bigger than what you say is bantam weight.
