Hey my fellow cluckers!
My oldest hen has a completely bare bottom. Her whole backside is exposed and red. I've been watching her and noticed that she and sometimes her sisters are pecking/pulling at her backside. The exposed skin is red and irritated. She is very shy and HATES being held. I wonder if it's a parasite or bullying. I tried making dust pans with diatomaceous earth but my girls wont get near anything white..HELP!! Thanks!

Many things can be going on here. First, grab her and cover up the "red," Red is a trigger and the others will peck her into wound city where she needs to be in a separate hospital. You can put some triple antibiotic creme on the area and then spray it with Blu Kote to cover the Red with Purple. Then to solve for the problem, make sure you're feeding enough protein. Add protein if this is lacking. Dust bath is 100% required and it doesn't need to be made from DE. Get plain ole soil and/or sand. Check for mites and such.... Just a few things to get going. Good luck.

Thank you so much.. They have a outdoor run that is 150' x 150' and large coop. They have dug holes everywhere. They eat 19% protein Layena and 19% protein scratch for treats along with fresh veggies daily(blueberries are their fav). I will find the blue Kote . Again thank you so much!
