bare butts

I visited a farm up the street from us today. They have an apple orchard, and sell eggs. I was able to walk back to where their chickens were. Almost every hen had no tail feathers. Their butts were bare and red. What would cause that?

Picking or lice. I adopted a chicken Awhile back with a bare bright red bottom and her particular problem was lice.

I was worried about that. As soon as I saw them, I wanted to leave because I was worried about mites or lice. My 5 girls have beautiful feathers and nice fluffy butt feathers. I felt so bad for these girls. In a dirt lot, apparently only used for eggs and the eggs are being sold at free range prices when they obviously aren't free range.

It makes me sick to see things like that and feel so helpless about it. The poor chickens
