Barley for chickens?

My family has a friend who brews his own beer. He sometimes offers us barley to feed the chickens, and we've never turned it down. they appear to love it

and all we have to do is pick it up and dry it, usually toasted in the oven until dried. I'm sure it's healthy for them. Does anyone else do this?

When I was a kid we put barley through a grinder and fed it to the hens as mash. They loved it.
