It works, is cheap (50lb bag for $1.99) non caustic & safe for critters. I just went out .... and DOWN the stairs... think I wrenched my back a bit. It is just totally iced up here and the chooks and ducks are sliding around trying to be out and about. I have some non-slip barn lime so thought I'd throw some down on the really slick spots. Works like a charm and I don't have to worry about it hurting anything. The Muscovies esp. were walking around VEEERRRY slowly trying to keep on their feet & seemed much happier once I threw some lime down so they could walk more comfortably.
