Barred Rock Chick

Ok. I have seen pictures of Barred rock chicks (5 weeks old) and all of my chicks look normal. One of them named Jet is not getting his coloring. He is pure black, with white wing tips and slight barring. Very, very faint. I believe he was the one who got sick when he was a few days old and he is a runt. Is this coloring thing normal? Or is it just something about him specificly?

I got my Barred Rocks at 10 1/2 weeks old, so I cannot help with your question.

But, I hope to keep you high enough on the postings so someone else know what they look like as chicks can answer your question.

The only ones with that type barring I've had are all products of some rooster with a BR hen. The cockerels get their barring from the mother, but the barring is "ghosty". Had a bunch of Silver Phoenix over BR hen chicks, all cockerels had that faint barring. Same with a Cochin/Silkie cross roo over BR hens. Males were barred, females black.

So, Ideal might have given me a cross? I thought they were sort of purebred. Suppose not....

he could just be a cull. you dont always get normal coloring from normal colored birds. doesnt mean he wont be pretty, if you're not aiming to show
