What would a Barred Rock mixed with Maran look like, and what color eggs would she lay? I suppose it would depend on which parent was male and which was female? I have a hatchery stock Barred Rock pullet whose feather coloring is WAY different from my Barred Rock hen. It’s a much warmer grey and appears slightly penciled or laced vs. barred. She’s sporting a single comb and clean, yellow legs with black on the front. She just started laying and her eggs are a VERY pale brown, almost cream. Her feathering has me wondering if the hatchery messed up. She also looked a bit different as a chick from the rest of the BRs, which is why I chose her!

I'm pretty sure a common Black Sexlink is made using a Black Copper Marans male over a Barred Rock female. They lay a light brown/beige egg. The BR female passes the barring on to only the males, while the females resemble a BC Marans. What color is your Marans fella?

Thanks for your response. I only have females. I’m just wondering if the pullet in the photo could be a BR mixed with Maran vs. a pure BR. It appears the hatchery may have messed up. It doesn’t really matter to me too much, since mine are pets, but I think she looks WAY different in feather color and pattern from most BR’s I’ve seen.
