Can someone explain how the gene for barring works? If a barred rooster is bred to a solid color female will the chicks be solid? What if the female is barred and the roo solid? Or is it not as simple as that?

Here's what I know:

A barred male bred to any female will produce all barred chicks.

A barred female with certain males like RIR, NHR and Brown Leghorn will produce sex-link chicks, with the male chicks being barred.

It is much more complicated than that, but I don't know enough about it to explain.

I hatched chicks from all Barred Rock mothers and different fathers, none barred. ALL the males had barring, none of the females had barring. If the Barred Rock had been the sire, ella is correct in that all chicks would be barred in some form.

Yep! I have 2 BR crosses. Their dad was my big boy, Rizzle. Rizzie's mom was a Dominique, so I guess she doesnt count, but Razz's mom was a brown EE. He is Barred, but he has a thick, stocky body like his mom. He also has a few brown and green feathers mixed in.
