we are new to raising chickens waiting patiently for eggs... Coop is in order nesting boxes are being used they are 16 weeks old and just started feeding laying pellets

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. What kind of chickens do you have? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting those eggs.

You may want to put a golf ball or two in the nest boxes, to give them the idea, that eggs belong there. When they are close to laying, their combs will enlarge and redden. They may also squat when you touch their backs.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Oh the anxious wait for eggs! I've been there several times. It sure isn't easy! I'm so inpatient too! LOL Like drumstick diva mentioned, watch for reddening combs and squatting. Both are signs that your pullets will begin VERY soon. Also, they may "sing" a lot before and after they lay. Investigating and trying out the nests is also very common. Putting fake eggs or golf balls in the nest will show them where they should be laying their eggs. It'll also make them believe their eggs will be safe there.
Be sure to post your first eggs pics here when they arrive!

Thanks for the advice I will try the golf balls.we let our chickens free range if they lay their eggs in the woods will they have a habit of laying outside the coop? Should we keep them in their run until they get used to laying in their boxes?

If you put fake eggs or golf balls in the nests and as long as the pullets know where the nests are, they should lay in them. Otherwise, yes, you will need to confine them to their pen/coop area until they figure out that the nests are where the eggs go.

We got our first egg today... Barry's Father's Day gift from his girls someone suggested to listen for vocals and boy they were not kidding they all made a lot of noise to let us know. Just one egg so far looking forward to more.
