Okay--there are a couple of post about incubators and it's not helping me control my need to purchase more chicks.

My question--how many folks get a good hatch rate from shipped eggs?? I plan to purchase some for a project for DD and just wanted to know everyones opinions.

I have had everything from zero to 80%. It is a complete crap shoot as far as i am concerned. I have had zero hatches from locally picked up eggs and really high, medium or zero from shipped. I have shipped eggs across country and buyers have had great hatches, and then nothing, or vice versa. I have set my own eggs and had great hatches and complete busts, because of the learning curve with styrofoam incubators.

I think it depends on how the post office handles them and the weather. Most sellers who ship eggs do a wonderful job packing them. That being said, I don't think the post office has much respect for what's inside the box. I have had great hatches from shipped eggs and terrible ones, and they were all packaged very well. I was just about to quit buying eggs after two terrible hatches recently. I decided to give it one more try, and as of this morning, I have 20 out of 42 chicks hatched with many more of them pipping.

Bottom line, hatching shipped eggs is a chance. All sellers have a Post Office disclaimer for good reason.
