BB Red OEGB Scratched Out Feathers

1) What type of bird , age and weight.- BB Red OEGB, about 10 months, 1 1/2 lbs
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Acting fine, eating, and active but not crowing at all, when my other roos start having crowing contests he just dosent join in any more. He has scratched out all of his hackle feathers and some of his saddle feathers.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? a week
4) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. no
5) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. mites been treating all chickens and coop with DE.
6) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.- yes, normally.
7) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.- normal
8) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? treating with DE
9 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Treat self if possible
10) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. see below
11) Describe the housing/bedding in use- had straw but was recently removed now they have bare ground and coop is off ground.

I know it is not molting because he does not have any new pin feathers coming through and his skin is scaly not smooth.

End--I was thinking about your rooster last night as I was lying in bed reading Storey's (I know that is really weird!) and I read about de-pluming mites. It sounds like that could very well be his problem. Even if it is some other kind of mite, you need to get something stronger than DE to fight them. DE is good to keep mites from getting a foothold, but won't knock them out if you have them. You will also need to do more than one treatment. I'll see if I can find more info on de-pluming mites and treatment.

Storey's says--to control the depluming mite, use a dip containing 2 ounces of sulfur and 1 ounce of soap per gallon of water. Dip the birds to set the feathers to skin level. Dip only on warm days. Repeat the treatment in 3 or 4 weeks if necessary.

Now I am not certain this is your problem, so try to find more info if you can.
