I have Black Australorp hens that have bred with my BCM rooster. A broody little Banty hatched 5 of the eggs this winter (she would have tried to hatch a bowling ball if I had let her). Can anyone tell me the possible outcome of this. Will the pullets lay dark brown eggs? Can I breed the pullets back to the rooster or is that not a good idea if I want to raise more chicks. Not looking for show stock with these, just great eggs. He has also bred with some of the banties. (He is a ladies man).
I also have an Americauna rooster that has bred with our Buff Orpingtons. (So has the BCM) Just wanting to know about egg color and the possibility of problems with inbreeding. I want eggs, but I want them to be healthy first. Thanks

possible outcome? all black birds. and yes they will lay darker than the autralorp. and yes its safe to cross them back to BCM sire

Well, come about last of May or June, I guess we will see what happens. One of the little pullets is a banty/BCM and she has the coloring of a BCM hen. She may start laying earlier than the rest. It will be interesting to see. I need to go take a couple of pictures of the little troop.

What is a BCM?

i had this cross of the BCM and black australorp and only one hatched but it was all black with leg feathers as a chick and grew out of them when it got older. it laid a darker color than a normal australorp. but it was still a nice dark color. it ended up being all black.

but i was wandering if all the chicks would be the same color and lay the same egg color.

I’m intrigued. I have 2 chicks currently with this mix. They started as black and white chicks, but are quickly feathering out all black. Images are from about 2weeks old. We call them Penny and Quinn as they both looked like penguins compared to the BCM and Barred Rock chicks!
