beak injury - please help

Well I think I found out who hurt my Ginger the other day. Who by the way is doing a little better each day, still not eating solids but she seems to be interested I'm going to work on more aggressive hand feeding..
Last night around 11:30 my dog started howling and pacing back and forth, seconds later I heard the ladies yelling up a storm.. I grabbed the shotgun and flashlight and ran out (barefoot) to the coop and sure enough the little bugger finally got inside the pen.. there up in the top corner of the pen was a huge racoon, he weighed in at 30lbs. Here I was looking all around the bottom and the corners and securing those areas and this guy made his way in through the chicken wire on the roof...All I can say is he ain't comin back anymore and thankfully he didn't hurt anyone else. All my ladies are safe and sound thank God we got to them in time. Needless to say I spent a few hours last night patching and will be spending most of my night tonight fixing that roof.

Yes Coons can get through the smallest hole..that is how one hurt mt little bantam last year.... You have to make sure there is not cracks or openings of any kind. Glad that you got the thing...but be careful, cause where there is one, there is more, and since they know where the food is, they may come back. So glad that she is doing better

I have another question or two if anyone can help with some ideas.

Miss Ginger is up and around, despite the damage to her beak she is trying to figure out how to eat and drink on her own.. my challenge is that the other 3 hens won't let her near the food or water and they basically attack her and she hides. So, I have isolated her again and she now has her own special place but she wants to be with everyone else. (its a little sad)

I had 2 ideas but I'm not sure which will work better or if there is a better idea out there.

1. I was going to spray everything and everyone down with a white vinigar solution just before bedtime and put Ginger in with the rest after they have all roosted for the night.

2. was to do all the above but add 2 new hens at the same time, thinking maybe they won't notice if there are 3 new hens and 3 existing hens.

HI, well i am glad she is recovering! i think the vinegar spray is a terrific idea, and you might have to do it a few times. I would also add extra feeding and water dishes for now so they can all spread out as needed.

I'd probably hold off adding more hens until she is fully recovered. You'd have to quarantine them anyways or you'd risk introducing diseases and/or stress.

can she eat/drink by herself?

she seems to be eating and drinking... its still a bit of a struggle but I'm not hand feeding her anymore. I figure that if she gets hungry enough she'll figure it out.. She seems to be getting stronger each day, So I'm assuming she's eating enough.. her comb is getting better color but still on the pinkish side.

I'm so sorry to hear about your hen!!!! But, glad that she's doing better. We once had a coyote attack (didn't get any of my girls) but, some of my girls lost some of their toenails, chipped a beak, and was in shock. Snap had the cracked beak. It wasn't near as bad as this, but it healed. But, I don't think that it'll heal. You have some good helpers!!
