It's a habit that most chickens that are kept in close quarters--production breeds- (think chicken houses with 10,000s of chickens)--. It's to prevent them from being cannibals and pecking each other to death.. This is done as when they are chicks before they leave the hatchery...

Maybe 18-20weeks old. Their combs are not very red or developed.
