Well about a month ago we had some bears remove the side of the coop in the night. The dogs alerted me and as I put the spotlight on the coop I saw two cubs come out from the roost house wall. Well Momma took her four cubs up the old oak tree and spent the night perched above my flock. After several calls to the DNR I was hooked up with the USDA bear guy "Trapper John". We successfully removed all 5 bears in one morning. Here is a link to the video of the last cub saying goodbye to ROC4K. Notice the roosters crowing in the background. These traps are only about 30 yards from the coops.

Needless to say the problem was solved...for now!

It's 4:20 long but very neat video.

Good video! Your lucky that the USDA was willing/able to trap them. In Massachusetts where I live we have so many bears that they generally don't relocate them because they would just be relocating the problem.

That's typically our problem as well. The three young girls on the property were more of the concern than the chickens. It also helped us avoid any fees.

The state trapper got tired of coming here for the bears, so they gave me an open dated depredation license tag. Here the first question from the trapper is, do you have access to a back hoe? This question is also asked when you get this tag. They really don't want to know about a problem for they have to deal with the bear nuts.

The trapper said his is more afraid of some of the
bear lovers than he is the bear. The first time he cught a bear in the trap, he had to take it to the local SPCA for dispatch. As he was at a stop light some dummy opened the trap in town. Now they had a mad bear in a town full of people. He shot and killed the bear as it was entering a school yard full of children. He feared shooting a child, but still put the bear down. Now he not only puts the bear down before he leaves the property, he locks the trap too.

Only one way to deal with a bear that has found your chickens, shoot it. Bear meat makes GREAT
bacon to go with your eggs.

bear bacon? I dunno...

My folks have a cabin up by Spooner and had a bear completely destroy their storage shed last summer to get at some bird feed. Those bears are fearless and BIG and love nothing more than to come right up to the front door and check you out. Breathtaking and TERRIFYING. Congrats on a successful trapping.

Great video Larry. I haven't seen more than three bears in one group around here. Just a mother and two cubs, can't imagine five.... Those cubs seemed to be fairly large. Not your typical springtime cubs. Glad that you had them relocated.

The info for the video stated that these 5 bears were removed from this location earlier. So were these 5 removed from the same location TWICE?

They didn't seem too bothered by the people filming, which is a little scary to me. I couldn't help but notice how beautiful the property was, with the open spaces and the birds singing and chickens doing their thing.
