bedding for nest box

What is the best bedding for my nest boxes? I need to be ready when the time comes for that first egg.

I bought a bale of pine shavings from the farm store. When I was taking care of my FIL's flock they didn't have anything in their nests, so I put straw in and he said the hollows in the straw were hiding and breeding places for mites and lice. I don't know if that is gospel but the shavings really keep the eggs nice and clean.

Don't get the cedar shavings though, apparently the oil of cedar is harmful to chickens.
