Bedding in Laying Boxes

We are VERY new at this and waiting for our hens to start laying. I get annoyed with them because every time we put straw in their pen and in their laying boxes, they always empty them - leaving nothing but the bare wood in the entire pen. Is this normal? If so, how do you keep bedding in the pen for them? If not, any suggestions for us?

I have the same problem. I've tried straw and have thought about the soft pine bedding for small animals. I wonder if they would prefer dried grass??

Do you have a 3" or 4" lip on the front the box?

I use pine shavings. My nesting boxes have a two inch lip to keep everything inside.

I guess my six must be well behaved. I have hay in mine and have a two inch lip on them and they havent emptied them yet. Do you have roosts for them in their coop that are off the floor?
