I started raising chickens in 2013 right after I retired. I bought a flock of 15 Buff Oprington pullets. When I bought them I was told that they would start laying "any day now", 6 weeks later I got that first beautiful golden brown egg. As the flock matured egg production went through the roof. I gave eggs to all my neighbors and kept lots for our use. Then a series of disasters struck, the flock was slowly decimated by predators despite my efforts to keep them safe. I rebuilt the pen stronger and tried Rhode Island reds. They never produced as well and to my dismay the predators returned. I now have a safe flock of Buffs.
