We joined the site in January but it's been a while since I have been active on here with all of the site updates/changes that have happened recently. Here is our introduction to the chicken life:
We bought four day old chicks in October 2016 from a friend of ours who raises chickens and has for a while. My two sons (ages 5 and 3) really wanted chickens because they were obsessed with the chicken in the show "Paw Patrol" that they watched religiously for quite some time. We didn't have any pets, my wife and I thought that having the fresh eggs would be a wonderful thing to have as well as giving the boys some responsibilities by making a family addition. We have a good size yard and a great place to build a coop/run. I did research for quite some time on everything from raising chickens, to building a coop/run, proper food/health concerns, etc...we used our friends for some valuable experience and got to see how good people cared for a healthy sized flock (24-30 birds) on a daily basis.
We started with three and have integrated a fourth over the past couple months for a total of four young hens (three are 10 months old and our newest is about 6 months old). We have our boss hen named Nuggz who is a barred rock, two RIR's named Chickaletta and Tater Rocker (these my boys named), along with a Golden Laced Wyandotte named Hilda. We absolutely love these hens, they truly have quickly become part of the family.
I discovered the site while doing my due diligence research to make sure we were going about this the right way to ensure we were prepared to join the ranks of the chicken life. I have greatly appreciated all of the help I have received from the kind users of this site and feel that I have learned so much by reading forums, asking questions, and checking out suggested resources that have been cited repeatedly by many of the BYC community.
My wife and I are school teachers in a small school district in southern Illinois but we live in Western Kentucky. I love being outside , we love to garden, and to spend time with our two sons playing in the yard. Our boys are definitely chicken obsessed, they love going to collect eggs in the afternoon once we get home from school/work/daycare, they love letting the girls out to range around the yard, and seeing them compete for the highly desired treat from the garden. Our hens have become quite entertaining and many a day do we find ourselves sitting in the sunroom and just watching them and their silly behaviors. We frequently dream up how we are going to add to our flock, improve our yard, coop, and run, all so that the chickens can be as happy and healthy as we are. We look forward to using this site and sharing our experiences!
Thanks so much!
