Hello BYC!
New to posting on your site! We live in the North Carolina piedmont and I’ve been raising chickens since my childhood. That’s a long time! We have used two dog kennels, the large ones. One has a cover and the other is covered with netting to stop predators. The coop sits inside the kennel with our girls. it takes up the majority of the roofed one.
My girls are a mix of healthy egg layers. Because I’m a sucker for them, once they’ve stopped laying, my freeloading girls retire until they die. That being said, I have about 5 out of my 10 that are ending their egg production. I have one freeloader who has reached the ripe age of nearly 7.
This past Spring, I hatched about 10 more an ended up with some beautiful Americaunas, thanks to a chick bought from a local hardware store that was supposed to be a pullet, instead he turned into a gorgeous Roo that I kept when my little Cochin bantam passed. I ended up giving away all the Roos out of that hatch. I have a granddaughter that loves being around chickens and when her favorite father hatch didn’t make it, my daughter went to another local hardware store and had to buy 5. I ended up with 3 more Roos that were Rock Barreds.
We have a few neighbors that are pretty close to us and they were glad to see my chickens when we moved into our new home. We kept hearing, “we don’t mind if they graze our backyards, it keeps the bugs down…”. And they also enjoyed the free eggs I passed out to keep the good will going for my girls. Imagine our surprise when we hear a knock at the door to find a county inspector who is issuing us a warning about our chickens being a nuisance! We were shocked! He to,d us who complained and even further blowing our minds, we find that it’s the neighbor who lives right next to us! I’m going to rant a little because our family, my DH and I are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. I hesitate to say Christian, because it tends to put people off, and it makes me angry that people just like our complaining neighbors, claim to be Christians, and instead of telling us about this, they flat out report us!
What we further find, is that someone who lives along our road, complained about someone having a carport too close to their property. I guess because the people who run that department in the county haven’t got much to do, we find out that they checked out every property on our road and saw our neighbor violating the carport distance rule. So this same county employee tells our neighbor that his carport needs to be moved, they assume that we complained. They felt comfortable enough to talk to us on a daily basis, but instead of talking to us, they retaliate by complaining about the chickens. And because we live so close, its caused a major rift between us. So much for “Christian“ neighbors, huh?
At any rate, I am looking at ways to let my girls be loose on our land and the fence cost right now is really out of the question. So I will be searching through this great source of knowledge in an effort to free my birds! Lol! Couldn’t resist…free bird…get it
Thank you for allowing me to join and to learn by read some of your great posts about chickens! Be blessed!
