My doggy jacket pattern is just a bit complicated for me plus my dog isn't cooperating. I'm thinking I would be better off making something like a poncho? Does anyone have a good link or personal tutorial for a poncho for a human? Not a hooded one, just a simple one? Or do you know of any other beginner projects? I just got this sewing machine and I'm dying to make something useful or wearable.

You can make a poncho out of a piece of fabric. Square fabric or rectangular. If it's square the opening for your head would go in the very center. If it's rectangular put the long ends together and the width of the fabric will go across your shoulders. If you want to put buttons on it, open up the side that will be the front.

What type fabric do you want to use? Polar fleece is nice and easy to work with and it doesn't unravel so it's easy to hem.

I would probably want to use a light material only because it would be used for looks and not warmth. My boss wears them all the time, they are kind of frilly on the ends. So I just cut a hole in the middle of a square and hem it up? Sounds perfect!

I Googled 'fabric poncho pattern' and saw there are a number of sites with directions. If you like the drapey poncho style of clothing, they could be made from soft fabrics and worn over a blouse and skirt or pants.

Have fun with your project.
