Hi,
I have a 2 1/2 year old Welsummer hen that has started to behave a little funny. She is one of an eight-hen flock. They are our only livestock and have been together since 1 week of age.

She is a little less vigorous, she spends a lot of time opening and closing her beak, and shaking her head. She also makes a little squeak too (which is new). She has a distinct poop streak down her back side. She still goes out to peck around when it isn’t too snowy and is eating and drinking water just fine.
I’d appreciate any insights.

Thank you,
Drew

Could you post a video of the hen doing this action?

Dyspnea, loud squeaks, head shaking is indicative of a tracheal blockage. That can be due to trauma, foreign matter lodged (stridor) , fungal spores, or mucous. Respiratory disease, environmental problems such as mold are other possibilities.

It does sound like she might have a respiratory disease or infection. Gasping, head shaking, sneezing or snicking are signs. Look for any nasal drainage, bubbles or foam in an eye, swelling of the face or eyelid, crackles or wheezing when breathing.
