If you have cold weather or rainy days where you live, build your coop and run in such a way that you can have shelter when you gather eggs and feed and water your flock--a place to step inside or a roof over your head.

Ventilation and drainage are key.

Put the coop and run in a well-drained place, not a low spot. Use grass swales and/or French drains to divert water around the chicken area.

You know that your ventilation is adequate when you can be inside the coop on a hot, summer day and it's no hotter inside than outside.
