Best breed of chicken for back yard?

The good thing about the $1 hens is that they are cheap and you know they are not roosters! I have only started with day old chicks so I am not sure how it is having a hen that you didn't raise.

The reason I went with chicks as opposed to grown hens, is that you can actually bond with the chickies. Almost like imprinting. Both times I have had chickens I got them as babies. I would think a started pullet would be a bit less social, but just IMO
