hoping to have the coop up in a couple of weeks and excited to get started. what breeds if any do you feel are best for a beginner? they will be well looked after and cared for so friendly and somewhat social would be good.
thank you in advance

what are you looking for?
Size, purpose, climate, are they going to be free ranged, etc

Orpingtons, Marans, Plymouth rocks, Sussex, Easter eggers, and Australorps are all good options for most people
just personal use for eggs.

Are they going to be pets? Many people say that production hybrids are friendly, but these hens can stop laying at an earlier age. I have a California White who is a production hen. She is a fantastic layer and has been for years. She took much of her fifth year off but is laying 3xs a week again this year. She is biddable but not a lap chicken. My Sussexes, Australorp, and Saphire Gem are all calm and friendly chickens.

I've always found the Barred Plymouth Rocks to be amicable and great layers, our Black Australorps are also friendly and great layers, my only whine is the eggs are a little smaller than the Rocks.

Dominiques, Australorps, Sapphire Gems (all these lay brown eggs), Prairie Bluebell Eggers, (beautiful blue eggs), Easter Eggers (various shades of greenish to blueish eggs),. All are cold and heat hardy, having small combs not subject to frostbite. ... um, wait, Australorps may have bigger single comb. Yup, roosters may get frostbite. Hens probably not so much.
