My friend swears by her Cochins as broodies, but I have a Buff Orpington that is only nine months old and has been broody twice. I have read that silkies are excellent broodies but I have never had them and don't personally know anyone who has.

Do the large fowl cochins make as good of broody hens as the bantams? Just wondering, saw this thread and I've recently been thinking that having broody hens is better than the old incubator and brooder method, but also like the original poster, don't really want bantams.

Well, I suppose it would. I had a bantam cornish who sat broody, and you know how small those chickens are. She did a suprisingly wonderful job.
