What would you guys recommend to clean my coops of sticktight fleas? I’ve been using a sort of powder but I don’t think it’s strong enough, does anyone recommend a spray type of bug killer? And what would you use on the birds? I’d prefer to use a really strong one on the coop and a healthy safe one on the birds.

You birds should have a place to dust bath themselves. Diatomaceous earth can be be put on the birds and Sevin dust can be put in the coup. I would change all of what ever bedding/litter material you have down, including nest box material, then spread the Sevin dust everywhere on the new bedding. It's been a while since I used it but I believe it can be put directly on the birds too.

Thank you, they live in a very big outdoor run where there are lots of dusty pits they use to bathe in, I’ll try my best to put diatomaceous earth in them.

Again, I'm sure Sevin dust will do the trick, but, if you research about Sevin dust it is very toxic to both animals and humans. I have never had to deal with those fleas yet, and they look really disgusting, but, I still wouldn't want to use anything that is that toxic. I wonder if there are more natural and safe methods.

The link you posted was a journal article written by NCAP. They no longer publish the journal but they still have a website. They have info on their website for natural alternatives. Outside of using DE, which I already mentioned, nothing else seems to be practical for chickens/livestock. They strictly talk about how to deal with fleas inside homes with cats and dogs. Here's a link to that. http://www.pesticide.org/fleas

There are a couple of discrepancies with the references the in the journal article. That's irrelevant because the bottom line is that there are people who would like to use more organic methods to control pests and I feel it's very important to respect other peoples rights and opinions.

I don’t think anyone means any disrespect. I use the Diatemacious Earth in my coop as well. Depending on how severe your problem is you may need to use something stronger. With the D E if the bugs don’t come into contact with it it’s not going to kill them. You can sprinkle it on the roosts, in their boxes and all over your coop floor. You can also make a small fabric bag and hang it so when they come in the door they will get dusted with DE every time.
As far as something stronger and natural, I’m not sure on that part.
