They are big and friendly, lay a big off white egg and people like to eat them because they have white skin. I won't eat mine.
Google them, they have been around since Roman times and they come in a red variety as well.

Maybe a bit more high maintenance than some other breeds, but if you want something that's fun to show...my large fowl Polish are good layers. They lay a nice, large (not huge, not grocery store jumbo, but good old-fashioned "large") white egg, and they lay just as well as any of my other large fowl breeds. And they're total eye candy.

And I live in MD, too, so I can totally hook you up with the birds you need for a new Polish addiction.

ETA: BlackBart, that is a pretty bird!! I don't know as though I'd ever paid attention to Dorkings before. Nice.

I have to say R.I. Reds (Rhode Island Reds). There a nice large bird that will lay a good size medium brown egg. I have both Rose and Single Comb Reds and had a problem with aggression.
