best feed mix

Ok everyone this may be a dumb one but it's been killin' me...What Is the best kind of feed for my chickens? I just started my flock this year. Should I still have 'em on the starter, layer, mix of the two or can I feed them a cheaper scratch grain? Oh, one more thing, when do I put out the oyster shells for them? thanks everybody,,,,,CJ

How old are they exactly?

I start out with grower/starter. Then, at 8 weeks old try and gradually turn them over to grower/finisher.

You don't want to feed them layer until they are almost ready to lay or have begun laying. Only put out oyster shell when they begin laying.

Scratch really has no nutrional value and should only be fed as a "treat" when it's cold out. It would be like us eating nothing but junk food all of the time! No good at all! But given a bit, in the winter can help keep them warmer in frigid/freezing temps. I don't give it to them unless it's below 40 F degrees.

I have a special mix made at the mill, to my specifications. This is for anyone 6 weeks and older.
It contains corn, soybean meal, millet, molassas, oats/wheat.
For my babies i use a starter and for the market birds i use a starter/grower/finisher.
