I want to raise meat turkeys, but ones that will be self-sustaining. I have a few BBB that I started with this year, and so far things are going fairly well, but of course they can't reproduce naturally. So what heritage breeds are good for meat? I know none will get as big as fast as BB varieties and I'm okay with that, but some seem to run really small.

I live in central FL, so plenty of warm weather, and I intend to free range them at least part time like I do my chickens.

Bronzes, narragansetts, and bourbon reds are all good sized heritage birds. Hollands have the most white meat. Royal palms are a little thinner in the breast than some of the others, and midget whites are chicken-sized (large chicken-sized).

do a search and look for sandspoultry = byc user name. very detailed summarries on each. They are not just color differences-- far more to the uniqueness of each.

My auburns are bigger than my bourbons which are the same as my narrigansetts.Still a newbie= stll learning.

norfolk blacks are good meat birds, but they may be hard to sorce in your area, but i fink that i can mate my single breasted bronze male to broad breasted bronze females and there hasnt been any problems yet
