Hi! We are pretty new to chickens. Have 7 chicks. We are starting on a permanent coop/run for them. We are fencing in a 10'x30' section of the yard and plan to put the hen house in the middle to give two runs so we can plant one and let it grow while they "play" in the other. So, the snag we have hit at this early stage is the height of the house. I have found SO many different suggestions on where the nest boxes should be and how far off the floor and just about as much about the roost(s). Can anybody help me out with what has worked best for their hens? We have 2 RIR, 2 Leghorns, 1 Ameraucana, 1 BR, 1 Black Australorp. Thank you all SO much. We have learned lots from the page so far and have gotten a lot from the coop designs as well!

OOPS! Just saw the "quick Question" post...must have missed it before. But any additional info would be helpful. We are planning to build the house on a wooden platform with legs, maybe 24" off the ground. I'll take any advise there, too. Thanks again!

I don't think it really matters the actual height, just make sure the roosts are higher than the nests. This keeps them from sleeping in the nests. My favorite heights are 18" up for the nests and 36" for the roosts. It's high enough for comfort but low enough they are okay with getting up there.
