Pretty straight forward -

what makes the best nesting box material, and how often should it be changed? (Do hens do nasty things in there in addition to laying eggs?)

I use the shredded paper that I get from shredding all my bills in the paper shredder. Free, unlimited source and I don't have to change it often cause the girls only go in the nestboxes to lay eggs and then they leave to freerange.
