I want to use sand in my coop and run I’ve read all about it but I can’t seem to find the “correct” sand. I live in Mississippi and have gone to 4 stores and got the sand pictured below. I read that this sand is not acceptable for coops after I had already gotten it. Suggestions on what I should get? Do y’all have pics of packages or where I could even order online?

I'm certainly no expert, but based on everything I've read recently -- which is quite a bit -- on this specific topic the consensus seems to be that you want sand without silica in it. If you read the label on most pre-packaged sand, there will generally be a warning about breathing the dust if there's silica in the sand.

For what it's worth, I had trouble finding sand without silica in it too... So, I ended up buying pre-filled sandbags; which were cheaper (by weight) than plain sand.

Best of luck.

Did you buy online? If so could I have the website please, thank you!

I bought from a local home improvement store called Anawalt. The pre-filled sandbags I purchased were $3.99 per 40 lbs bag; which is probably more expensive than bulk prices, but still less than half the cost (by weight) of play sand.

NOTE: These pre-filled sandbags were stacked on pallets. They're the kind used to manage rainwater, etc. The type of sand was not specified, but I asked to see the sand used to fill the sandbags and they had one opened already. By comparison to pre-packaged sand, the sand used in these sandbags was not uniform in grain size or shape... And looked very much like it had come from a river bed, if that makes any sense?
