Best thing to feed laying hens

I've tried all types of different feeds and things for the hens and have been out of the chicken business and haven't been on this site in a year or more but I'm back lol and trying to get my flock back up again now that I have money and spare time. Right now they still eating cheap scratch feed cause that all my mom and dad would buy while I was unemployed.

Get them a good laying feed, such as Layena or Dumor.....and free ranging is good also.

I use to feed them layena and then switched to hog topper because it was cheaper and the protein was higher. Is that still the case the higher the protein the better? Sorry for asking dumb questions but I've been out of the loop for a couple years now

After a certain point more protein doesn't do any more good. If they are penned up and all they are getting is feed then the percentage should be around 16 to 18%.

You want to try a good healthy organic feed? I just ordered a bag myself and its a all certified organic feed containing all organic ingredients like field peas, corn, wheat, oats, barely, fish meal, rice bran, alfalfa, flaxseed, kelp, wheat middling, vitamins A D E niacin riboflavin calcium B 12 folic acid iron zinc copper and added probotic like lactobicillus and more! A 29 pound bag is only 19 dollars! Not bad for organic feed. I got it from Countryside Organics. They are based in VA. But ship through out. I live in CA. And they ship to me without a problem! The food is absolutely beautiful and fresh.my hens go crazy for it!! If your considering a high end food defiantly give this a try! Go online to Countryside Organics and take a look. My chickens are free ranging for about 7 to 8 hours throughout the day. I also feed laying pellets I buy at the local feed store. They seem to like them very much. I subsidize their feed with table scraps and give them oatmeal on cold mornings, fruits, leftover meat (no pork) and lots of nuts. After seeing the ingredients in the organic feed, I'm wondering if it makes sense to buy it or regular feed? I don't buy big brand names but local - it makes me feel better somehow.

I'm still learning since this is my first go around with chickens. Mine are now 6 months old and laying everyday.
