Best Warmer for brooder

I’m needing info on warming plates for a brooder box. How tall they should be and what brand?

My chicks hatched mid-September. I used the K&H brand (small) AND plastic heat pad for the first 5.5 weeks - 8 chicks (I covered both items with Press & Seal wrap). That setup worked well. I was able to move them to the coop with a Sweeter Heater at 5.5 weeks (we just happened to have a spell of really nice weather for a few weeks in October/November).

The brooder plates are rated much the same as prefab coops - they are good for about half the number of chicks as they claim. If you have more than 8 chicks, go with the larger size or multiple plates.

Here's a pic of how I had it set up. The chicks could choose to be under the plate or on the heat pad. I had the plate at the lowest setting for the first week or so, and then kept raising it as they grew.
