Hi everyone!

I've got a large flock of free-range hens, as in they have 5 acres to run around on. They're pretty safe from predators, but a few of them have picked up leg mites. What are your favorite ways to treat them?

From my notes, what I've collected ....

Scaly Legs - Soak in warm water & mild dish soap. With toothbrush scrub with vinegar, garlic or Neem Oil. Smear leg with Coconut Oil. Clean out coop; remove shavings; spray Orange Insect Spray or DE, spread lavender, lemon grass, thyme, wormwood in shavings. Ivermectin (pour on) - Rub onto the legs, wear gloves. Std 0.75ml = 25ml ea leg & 25ml on skin. Ivomec on daily 1 & day 10, rub some kind of oil on legs daily. casportpony - Ivermectin doesn’t have to be given topically, the 1% ingectable & horse past can be used too. Vaseline or Bag Balm 1x wk for 2 - 3wks

There are a few different ways. Here are your options - http://www.poultrydvm.com/condition/scaly-leg-mites I just use vasoline.

How far you need to go to treat them depends on how bad they are.
I use bag balm for scaly leg mites.
Some pics would help here.

Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.

It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

I haven't had to deal with it myself but my neighbors birds had them. I used Ivermectin on them and put it on their legs trying to get it under the scales. The neighbors moved so I don't know the outcome but think it was a success.
