Gotta call em birds around my house as "chicken" has been associated with dehydrated chicken treats...

Here is a picture of me showing the chicks the garden in the basement.... I have been keeping some rubbermaids of swiss chard and lettus etc. going just for them...

Here is a better picture of my brooder....sorry about the smudge on the lens but Daisy nosed the camera without me knowing (daisy is my 110lb German Shepherd who protects our family and homestead)

Here she is keeping an eye on me to make sure I am not doing anything bad to the chick

Now my question....I cleaned a tiny piece of poop off one of the chicks bums by dipping its butt in warm water and gently pulling away the piece of poop with paper towels. The poop wasnt runny or anything...just stuck in the fuzz. Should I leave them alone when it is just a lil piece.

I don't have an answer to your pasty question, but wanted to say how cute? and I have a boarder collie that keeps tabs on me while I am working with my chicks. That is if I can get her to let me close enough too them.

Can anyone answer my question about pastybutt? Also how can I mark the chick that had the beginings of pastybutt so I can monitor it. I thought about using a sharpie and putting a dot on it...but it seems that the chicks peck at anything that stands out and I dont want them ganging up on the poor thing cause I marked her.

They ganged up on one little girl the first day because it had a clump of dried poop on it before I could clean it off (within the first 10 minutes of putting em in the brooder).

I don't know that much except what I was told here, I guess you should clean their little butts off cuz it could build up if you don't. I don't know about the marking of a chick tho. BTW your chicks are very cute!

Just keep up with the butt check I do every night!

Yes clean if off and then take a Q tip and wipe olive oil or veggie oil on their bum and it won't happen again. Soon they will grow out of that. Usually takes a few weeks. Good luck! I had that with my cochins and once I used the oil it never happened again...do it every night though for at least a week or more. If it happens again do the same thing.
