Bielefelder Brahma Cross

I was just wondering if anyone has tried a Bielfelder Brahma cross. I have 2 Brahma hens, one dark and one light. I have a Bielefelder roo chick coming so it will be some time before I would try this but I was just thinking about it and didn’t see any posts on the subject. Thanks

I've never tried it, but I can make some predictions.

--feathered feet, but not as many feathers as the Brahmas have

--pea combs, but larger than the pure Brahmas have

--some pattern of black on each of the offspring, but probably not quite like the patterning on any of the parent breeds

--white barring on all of the chicks (inherited from the Bielefelder father, of course)

--sons from the Dark Brahma mother should grow up to have black breasts with white barring like Bielefelders do (or like Dark Brahmas + white barring). Sons of the Light Brahma will probably have light breasts.

--sex-linked coloration: daughters have gold (or red or brown) in their feathers, sons have silver (white) in their feathers. The sons may get some amount of red in their shoulders and yellow in other areas as they grow up, rather than having the clean white of their mothers, but should be pretty clearly different from their sisters. I'm not sure if the color difference will show up in the chick down, or if you'll have to wait for them to grow some feathers before you can see it.

--they will probably grow up to be big birds

--females should lay brown eggs

Thank you. I’ve had chickens for about 5 years now and never tried doing any hatching of my own. I’m still trying to get an understanding of the what does what when you mix them thing. The genetics of it all I guess you could say. Thanks again for the information.

For me, I have to break it down into little clumps--just the comb, just the feathered feet, and so on. That makes it a bit more manageable

I'm curious on the out come. I will be trying this cross in 2022. Chicks are still to young.

I just bought a Brahma/Bielefelder mix from the feed store. They said they've done them a few times and they're sexlinked and great chickens. I'll see how it goes. Brahmas are such great chickens that I decided to give it a try.
