Just shooting for some alliteration in my title, but a real question:
I normally use a silkie for my broody... but I do like to take advantage of a broody when I have one, so when my 3 year old Australorp started sitting, I decided to give her a try. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner... I gave her Serama eggs to hatch. She's doing fine so far with the eggs, but should I remove the babies from her when they hatch and put them in a brooder? My Serama chicks are SO tiny at hatch, and my Australorp is a pretty big girl. Could stepping on them be a problem or would you just leave it up to nature?
I guess I'll probably just watch her carefully at hatch (I will be anyway since its her first clutch) but I was wondering if anyone had any definite knowledge to drop on this. Thanks!!

First of all, I love your use of alliteration. It makes my English major heart sing with joy.

Second, if you take them away, you might want to get some (bigger breed) chicks from the feed store to replace them, or she could freak out from having babies one minute to being babyless the next. Of course, if you watch her carefully, she could make an excellent mother. Keep all those tiny, fragile babies under close watch for a few days, or maybe give her some infertile eggs to sit on for a week after the hatch so that you can slip the seramas back under her when they're a little bigger and stronger.

Thanks for your reply! My only other option is that I'm getting several other chicks on Monday that I could swap underneath her at hatch, but by then, they'll be 2 weeks old... Too old? Will she notice? :) I feel like its possible the hormones might blind her enough that she'll be okay with it? But on that note, will the 2 week olds want to have a Mum after being in a brooder that long?
This is getting pretty interesting. Haha.
