Bio-filter Pond - Rough Plan - Seeking Additional Input

I'm buying a property that has a fairly large pond already in place. When I say pond I mean a grassy, weed-filled, semi terraced hole that gets irrigitaion (from AZ lake) and spills over into 1 acre pasture. It's a great start but I'm sure doesn't hold water for long, especially when temperatures hit 110+ outside (PHX area).
