Anybody got an idea how to safely get rid of bird lice? All you have to do is walk out to the hen house and they are all over you.

If they are bothering me that have to be bothering them.

I have used the drikill powder, but don't anymore--figuring if I have to wear a mask to apply it, it's not worth it. Lat time I put a few drops of ivermectin on the back of their necks, and it seemed to work.

Ivermectin does work, but is not approved for use in chickens, so you have to research and improvise the dose. Dusting with 5% Sevin dust (gardening section) also works. So does a spray or dusting powder of permithrin/pyrethrins, such as Adams' flea and tick spray, or "poultry dust" from the feed store.

Eprinex is a pour-on form of Ivermectin intended for cattle. I have read here to use 0.5 ml on large breeds and 0.25 ml on banties, placed directly on the back of the neck. This also kills most types of worms.

Thanks for all your help. I was thinking the seven dust but wasn't sure it would be safe, so glad to know it is. I am going to check the feed store for the other stuff you mentioned also.

I have used SEVIN and I thought it worked well.
Do make sure that you clean out EVERYTHING!!!!
The shavings need to go and you should dust the floor, roosts, nest boxes and anything else.

can children be around any of these things? what would be safest for them? how do you tell if they have lice/mites? sorry, very new here.

all this talk about lice and mite and I feel itchy all of the sudden. aaah. anyone else? perhaps I need some faux sevin for my psyche?
