Lizzil
In the Brooder
I figured I should introduce myself since today is my one week anniversary of being a chicken mama. Hi, I'm Liz. A friend found a baby chick on the street with no other chickens around...and I somehow ended up with her. I'm already in love! My husband was so confused- but he's being a good sport. Right now she overnights (and when I leave the house) in a bird cage, but soon I will be building a lean-to coup/run off the house for when she's older.
Birdtrude is going to be a house chicken. On another thread I've already been told by quite a few people it's a bad idea to only have one... She will have a dog and cat as siblings and I'm around a lot. The dog (a 5 pound chihuahua) totally adores her, Birtrude already has the upper hand in that relationship- a little nose peck is all that is needed to tell her "too close".
Her favorite things so far are digging in the garden, eating tomatoes, and snuggling into a hand.
Yesterday we went to the beach, Birdty had fun digging in dried seaweed, having sand dust baths and perching on tree branches. Today she came with me to the salon (the owner was her rescuer and I knew wanted a visit). I put her in a sling I made from the bottom of a tee shirt and she was perfectly content to sit against my chest the whole time. It was such a success I see many more outings in her future.
I've already gotten really great info from this forum just lurking. So thanks so much! I hope to be able to contribute to it as well.
