We are new-bees to backyard chicken ranching. We have two black Australorp chicks---but we don't want a rooster. How can we tell a boy from a girl at about 2-3 mos age?

Welcome to BYC!
There are some things that may help. Roosters will have a larger, brighter comb. Roosters tend to look longer in the legs and to walk with more "forced" steps, like they think highly of themselves. They will stand up taller and tend to be bolder.
Hens, on the other hand, will probably keep a pale comb until they near laying age. They won't develop long tail feathers, saddle feathers or hackles.
