I've got 6 20 weekers, all different breeds. The Black A. is so funny. She is very people oriented, and even since being a tiny chick, is super curious about whatever it is us humans are up to. She walks into the house and stands around the kitchen when I'm cooking, or comes over and jumps on my lap looking for a handout. She follows us around the yard, and even runs up to the dog to see what he's up to. Maybe she's just a really great chicken, but I'm curious to see if it has anything to do with her breed. Anyone else?!

My BA's are the same way. I can pet or pick up any of them, and only 2 or 3 of the others are as friendly. I did not spend a lot of time handling them, either, though I do sit around in the coop and watch them and offer treats from my hand. I have about 10 BA pullets at 23 weeks, one roo the same age, and one older hen in another flock, who is also no problem to handle, and comes running when I go outside.

Mine are the opposite. I have seventeen 7-9 week old chicks - 6 EEs, 2 barred rocks, 3 orpingtons, a light brahma, & 5 australorps. The 5 australorps are the most skittish of all. All the other breeds will come up to me and let me hold them or hop up onto me, but the BAs run the other way.

The BAs, LB, & a BR were raised by a hen (instead of us) for the first few weeks, so that may have something to do with it, but the BR & LB also raised the mother hen are friendly with us.

I had three BA's and culled two for viciousness, kept the third because though she's an a**, she's a great flock defender.

When it comes to BA's they seem to tend to one end of the spectrum or the other, really sweet and tame or true jackasses of the bird world.

i was once chicken phobic. couldnt even hold a chick. my husbands australorps being so quiet helped me on my road to recovery and i m now getting as chicken crazy as the rest of you here. lol

I have 4 BA's. They were the first girls we got when started into this adventure. They were 7-8 months old when we got them. They weren't to interested in us at first, then they realized who was always out there feeding them

Now as soon as they hear me or a bag, they swarm

They eat out of my hand and I have had 2 go broody this summer - very good mommies! They are also wonderful with my other chickens. I have a wide variety from Seramas to large fowl Salmon Favrolle, and have not had any trouble integrating any of my birds. The only problem is that I can't tell them apart!

Here's a close-up of one of my girls (I couldn't get away from her!

My only BA went broody, and I let her hatch a mixed lot of chicks. She was a great mom. When the babies got big- she just went back into the big coop one night. She is not shy at all- but I have a white rock that acts just like yours (in the first post). We call her "the ringleader".
