I live down in southern Alabama with near torpid summers and I was curious about how Black Australorps do in the heat. A typical summer temperature is about 98 degrees. Do their black feathers increase their heat stress?

If they have plenty of well-ventilated shade, they should be fine. I'm in NW AZ, and our summer temps are in the low 100's. In the heat of the day, mine all stay in the shade, even the BOs and Lt. Brahmas.

I'm in OK (Hell's armpit during the summer) and they do WONDERFULLY!

Some of the best layers and easy to care for in the summer. We have a well ventilated pen and plenty of shade...but still. With the 110-120 temps and humidity...they do great!

My BAs did well this past summer in the high 90's and low 100's. I just made sure they had shade and plenty of water. I did put frozen 2 litre bottles filled with water out there for them if they wanted to cool down.
