I currently have 8 black Australorp chicks that will be 9 weeks old tomorrow. I hatched them myself and received the eggs through a breeder. That being said, obviously the eggs came from various hen and rooster combinations which has made it really difficult to determine the gender of a couple of them. I have 4 that I am about 90% confident are pullets and 2 that I am equally confident are Roos. Then, I have the last two…I had originally thought they were Roos based upon their shear size! They are larger than all the other chicks but their mannerisms and coloring/size of the comb and wattles has me conflicted and possibly leaning towards pullets. Any thoughts?
I attached pictures of the two in question. The one on the left is always laying around/hanging out with one of my known roosters to where it seems like the rooster is protecting it. Although it is hard to see on the other chick, it’s comb has a black coloring to it.
Thank you for your help!

I think the one on the left could be female, but the wattles are large for that age. I would give them more time.

Around 12 weeks cockerels will start growing in male specific feathering, and that is a sure sign. In the meantime, all you can do is watch the combs and wattles for growth spurts and deep red coloring.
