I am new here and I guess I posted this thread in the wrong section. My mom showed me this forum so I though I would repost in the correct place. I am interested in keeping this updated with the chicks as they grow to help any one else out in the future. I was also kindly informed that my photos of wings will not help me unless they have a gene linked to feathers growing, and I do not know if my birds do or not. So, we will see how they turn out and if there are any warning signs.
Hi there! We had 4 babies hatch on Easter this year
smile.png
great day! Their rooster is a Blue Copper Maran and the hens were Black Copper Marans with one of the hens being an Ameraucana. So we have 3 black/blue crosses and one Olive Egger. Anywhoo..

I read a lot on these forums and I waited until day 3 and took some photos of their wings to see if we could tell what gender they were. It was REALLY hard people. I've never hatched chicks before, so thats probably why but if I would look on one's wing and decide that it was a girl, then I would look at it's other wing and those thoughts would go out the window and I would think it's a boy.. soo, obviously I need some help. The little ones are now 11 days old and they all have tails and full wings down to their little chick butts! Everyone seems to be growing at the same speed, I will update this thread with photos over the next months, but would anyone like to take guesses?

This one I call Gandalf the Grey

This one I've dubbed Glinda the Good Witch

might not be permanent, but for the moment I've been calling this one Duckie

This one has not been named, nothing jumps out yet except Cheesehead...

So, like I said, I had a real tough time trying to decipher these wings. Now, pretty much everybody has wings that look like Gandalf's

Gandalf and Duckie are the most calm and the most eager to be held. Cheesehead and Glinda are a bit more "mom-bound" but are warming up to us.

okay, enough of that. Enjoy some baby chick pics and vids!!

Photos to come as they grow!

Three weeks old!! These babies grow quickly. 21 days in these photos. Also, cheesehead is now Fiona/Shrek depending on the gender. And Duckie is now Annabelle.

So there is the update!! More to come in the weeks to follow. Pretty sure Gandalf is properly named as a boy. Fiona/Shrek I'm not sure about. And then Annabelle and Glinda are probably girls. BUT I still want your advice on what the better experts think these cuties will turn out to be :)

So Fiona/Shrek....where did the barring come from? The chick had to have one barred or cuckoo parent to have that coloring. Knowing which parent it was can help determine gender.

@donrae one of the chick's hen was an Ameraucana Easter Egger(edit: hen is a Cream Legbar NOT Ameraucana). We weren't sure which one because they all hatched at the same time and we weren't there to see it. So it could be Fiona! I was wondering where that came from as well.

Is this hen barred? Do you have a picture of her?

Or is it possible one of the hens is a Cuckoo Marans, not a black copper?

Either way, if the momma is the barred/cuckoo bird, and the rooster is not, then the barred chick is male, sorry. It's a genetic thing.

@donrae now that you mention it I remember the owner of the flock saying she is a Legbar Ameraucana. So it is possible.

Here she is

Here is the father of the chicks

There are at least a dozen hens that look like this. Impossible to know which one

Anyone care to vote on the poll? Who's a roo and who's a hen? :)
