Does anyone know any reputable private breeders that have Black Copper Maran chicks for sale this spring? I'm looking for about 10 hens and 2 roosters and obviously am going for the super dark eggs. I would like to stay clear of the big hatcheries (McMurray, Meyer, etc.), as they specialize in cranking out large amounts of birds and do not specialize in egg color.

I’d recommend emailing MCCUSA (Marans Chicken Club of America) or even joining. I’m not a member, but they put me in touch with the leader for my district, who is now my best chicken friend and go-to for all things Marans. They will probably do the same for you. Members, of course, get a Breeder Directory.

FYI: Springleaf states on their website that they are closing for the year due to some of their chickens getting sick: "I am sorry to inform you that I just found out my chickens are sick. We got test results are back. Unfortunately my chickens tested positive Mycoplasma Synoviae & Gallisepticum." Visit her site for more info.

I was so bummed to hear this as I was planning to order several breeds from her. :-( The owner, Linda, is an awesome lady, and I hope the problems she's facing get resolved soon.

@kgallego, did you find the BC Marans you wanted? My friend Kim Renninger (my MCCUSA contact) is a prizewinning breeder, she is selling hatching eggs and chicks. Her birds are wonderful, I was especially pleased with the white Marans I purchased last month. Pics below. You can look her up on Facebook, The Peeper’s Keeper, in Nottingham, PA.

I’m sorry I don’t have more pics of the Black Copper Marans, I got her mixed up with some BCMs from another breeder. I’m sure when she gets older I will be able to tell them apart though. The pics below are of my BC hen from Kim
